Feedback and Response

So I got a comment recently that a reader was getting confused about all the characters.  To be honest I get confused every once in a while too.  Well have no fear, I have written a  list of all the characters to Chapter 31 (Which is where I am currently writing).  You may be confused by some characters, but that's OK.  It will make more sense as the story continues.  :)

There are a lot of little minutia that I still have to fill in, like all the powers, but here's what I've got.  Some characters don't make huge appearances, and most haven't been introduced yet.  But you'll have this to refer to if you get confused.  Happy Reading! :D

Evils of the Night-Chapter 11

The Dead Awaken

“What are you doing?” Lucia demanded.

Sylvia jerked herself awake. At first she was confused. Then she realized what had happened. “I'm not sure. I think I just...fell asleep and fell over.”

Lucia was unconvinced. “Why are you hitting on Jayden? Isn't it obvious that I liked him first? Where's the camaraderie we night elves have, huh? Where's the looking out for each other? I thought we could be friends, Sylvia, but I was wrong. You're trying to steal my man!”

“It's not what you think, Lucia. Jayden and I are friends. That's all.”

“Then why was it you he called for help? Why is it you who holds him? Why is it you that never leaves his side?”

“Maybe he didn't have your number. Maybe it's because I'm there when he falls. And I stay with him because that's what friends do for each other.”

“He has my number. He never gave me the opportunity to catch him, and you need a break!”

Sylvia's tired gray eyes showed that she wasn't up for arguing. “Look, I just want him to get better, OK?”

Lucia's eyes didn't relax. Instead, they grew more hostile. Finally, she was so overcome with passion that she lost control of her powers. She threw lightning bolt after lightning bolt at Sylvia, who blocked them all with electricity of her own. Lucia could also control fire, but she was no match for Sylvia, who threw them out of the way just in time. She even tried to throw one back, but Lucia zapped it with electricity, sending blue and orange streaks up out of the ceiling through the moon's window.

It was then that Frederick discovered them. He pounded his staff on the silver floor and shouted, “Cease this instant!” his face was red, even the tip of his pointy nose was red. He stormed over to the girls. Sylvia was so tired that she could barely stand, but Lucia was still in the middle of her rage. “What is this!? Fighting in the moon room? Near a patient? I am outraged! Lucia! You were told not to enter this room until Jayden was well! What are you doing here?”

“I came to relieve Sylvia.” she said.

Frederick looked at Sylvia. She only managed a shrug. “Leave this instant!” Frederick snapped.

When Lucia was gone, Frederick turned to Sylvia. “It is not wise for you to use your powers against Lucia. She is less powerful but more experienced. You are drained and tired. It was unsafe.”

“I'm sorry Frederick.” she sighed.

“Go rest, Sylvia.” he said. “I will watch over Jayden. It's time to change the medicines anyhow.”

Sylvia reluctantly laid down on the cot that was set up near Jayden's. However, within minutes, she was asleep.

Frederick let her sleep. He sat by Jayden for hours. Suddenly, he stirred and opened his eyes.

“Sylvia?” he said quietly.

“Shh. She sleeps. And for the first time in ten days she sleeps soundly.” Frederick said.

“What?” Jayden whispered.

“She has not left your side these ten days past.” Frederick said.

“Really?”

Frederick shook his head. “She barely eats, barely sleeps. Her only thought is for you.”

Jayden's eyes lit up. “You're sure?”

Frederick smiled. “Why else would she take so little care of herself?

Jayden craned his neck to see her, curled on the cot, sleeping soundly.

“Jayden. I have foreseen things. Sylvia's human relationship has ended. She begins to feel things for another that she does not understand.”

Jayden's jaw tensed.

“Don't get jealous, Jayden.” Frederick chuckled. “She feels for you.”

Jayden's eyes grew wide. “I-I don't know what to think!” he sputtered.

“Be gentle with her, Jayden. I have solved her mystery. This human relationship has hurt her very deeply.”

“What is her mystery?” Jayden asked.

“That is a question you must ask her.” Frederick said.

“Frederick?” Sylvia murmured. She was awake. “How's Jayden?”

Jayden quickly shut his eyes and went limp. Sylvia got up.

“He's going to be alright.” Frederick said. “He heals nicely. Watch him for a while longer. I have things to do.”

Sylvia resumed her seat by Jayden's side. Frederick left the moon room, leaving them alone.

“Jayden?” Sylvia whispered. “I know you can't hear me, but I have to tell you that I never really loved Jake. I know you were jealous of him. I guess he never really loved me, because he broke up with me. I don't know why, but it really hurt. I don't even know why I'm telling you. I guess I know you like me a lot.” she sort of laughed. “And what's funny is that, even though Jake and I are over, it's like I like you too.” she brushed a lock of his hair back from where it lay. “You have to get well soon, Jayden.”

Jayden hoped the pounding of his heart wasn't audible. He hoped the shivers that went up and down his spine didn't make him twitch. What should he do? She thought he was unconscious. He could sit up and tell her he loved her, kiss her, and everything would be alright, or he could continue to lay there like a log.

He took too long deciding, because Frederick returned.

“Sylvia.” he said. “I need your assistance in preparing for the full moon tomorrow night. Those stars up there need dusting. Usually one of the wood elves does it for me, but no one other than us is allowed in here while Jayden is ill. Could you do it for me?”

“Of course.” she said.

The stars were at the top of the vaulted ceiling, and they were the stars Frederick used to determine the powers of new elves, so they had to be perfectly clear. Sylvia was hooked up to the pulley that would carry her up to the ceiling. She then used her powers to haul herself up. Frederick secured the ropes when she was finished.

“How often do you dust these things? They're filthy!” Sylvia called down.

Frederick chuckled and went over to Jayden. “How strong are you?” he asked.

“Strong enough to get up now.” Jayden muttered.

“Strong enough to catch a falling star?” Frederick pressed.

“What do you have in mind?” Jayden asked.

“Be ready to make a run for it.” Frederick said, turning toward Sylvia and the stars.

Sylvia wasn't watching the old man. She was too intent on the stars. So when all of a sudden the rope slipped and she went hurtling toward the ground, she was at first not scared. However, it took less than a second for that switch to flip.

“Frederick!” she shouted.

The old man wasn't quick enough or strong enough to catch her, and she couldn't see Jayden jump from the cot and streak across the silver floor. She didn't see him until she landed in his arms.

“You got faster, Fred—Jayden!”

“Hey Sylv.” he said, setting her down. She immediately threw herself at him, hugging him tight.

“Jayden you're alright!”

He held her at arms' length. “Sylvia. I love you.”

Sylvia was startled. “Y-you do?”

“You must've known. I know you know. You told me.”

“You heard that?” she blushed.

“Every word. Sylvia, you mean everything to me. I don't know what I'd do without you.”

“What about Lucia? She's madly in love with you too.”

“I don't care. She's a black. I'm a purple. There's no chance for her.”

Sylvia and Jayden were finally together. However, preparations for the full moon were still unfinished. The Mud Queen's whereabouts were unknown, and elves were set on watch at all times. The tree was safe because it was magical. The Moon Queen protected it. Elves were sent on nightly patrols to make sure the Queen didn't come near the tree. Jayden and Sylvia, and the three night fairies were staying in an inner chamber of the night level of the tree. The fairies names were Drake, Warren, and Fayette. They kept mostly to themselves on the fairy side of the chamber. Sylvia and Jayden anxiously waited for the full moon and the arrival of the third elf.

Evils of the Night-Chapter 10

Vanished
It didn't take too much longer for Sylvia to kiss her father goodbye and watch him drive away. He was going to stay with her Aunt and Uncle, who lived in town. She was going back to Jayden's. She strapped her duffel bag of supplies to her quad and hurried back to Jayden's house. When she got back, the little girl and the mother were gone, and Jayden was sweeping up the glass.

“Feeling better?”

He showed her how he'd tied his upper arm to his torso so it wouldn't move the shoulder. “Smart, eh?”

“Yeah.” she said.

That's when her phone rang. “Oh no.” she said, then answered it. “Hey, Jake.”

“Hey! Are you busy tonight?”

“Um, yeah, I'm staying over at a friend's house.”

“Oh, OK. I was just wondering if you wanted to go out to eat with a bunch of us tonight, but have fun.”

“I will. I have to go now.”

“Hey, can I stop by later?”

“No, um, I'm already there. We're spending the day together. I'll call you later.”

“OK bye.”

“Bye.” she hung up the phone.

“Who was that?”

“My boyfriend.” she said, nonchalantly, sticking her phone in her pocket.

“That guy from the party last night?” Jayden asked drily.

“Yeah.” Sylvia said, blushing a little.

“Figured.”

“What's that supposed to mean?” she asked.

“Nothing. It's just a little predictable though, don't you think?”

“I don't care if it's predictable. Besides, why are we talking about this? We have two dead people in this house and we're going to have problems if someone calls, or the cops show up.”

“Right. I say I call in and tell the cops we were attacked, but we don't know who it was.”

“Sounds like a plan. But, um, tell 'em you're staying somewhere other than here.”

“Alright.” and Jayden called the police.

Within a few minutes, an officer was knocking on the door. Two cars were parked outside.

“Hi, you Jayden?”

“Yes, sir. Come in.”

The officer entered. He saw Sylvia. “You are?”

“Sylvia.”

“Are you related?”

“No sir. She's a friend.”

“What happened?”

So Jayden told the officer what he'd told Sylvia. Of course, he left out the part about being elves.

The officer called in a couple ambulances to take the bodies to the hospital for autopsies. Jayden and Sylvia were taken in for questioning. Jayden told the officer that he was staying at a relatives' home, and that they could reach him by his cell phone. He also told them that these relatives were picking him up at the old house. Sylvia asked to be taken there as well, allegedly because her quad was still there. And so both of them were left alone.

“We have to go to the tree. Everyone's panicking that you're not showing up.” Sylvia said.

“I can't, Sylvia.”

“Please, Jayden. The elves will be able to help you.”

“I can't.”

“Jayden.”

“Sylvia, I really can't.”

“Whyever not?”

Jayden sighed. “I don't want the fuss.”

Sylvia nodded. “I'll take care of the fuss. Just please, let's go.”

Jayden relented, and they left at midnight. It was strange feeling Jayden's arm around her waist as Sylvia steered the ATV through the woods. His bad arm was still tied tightly to his chest, and it pressed against her back.

Jayden was in too much pain to be exuberant about this arrangement. With every jolt of the ATV he clenched his jaw and pinched his eyes shut so the tears wouldn't leak out. There was one thing he'd hidden from Sylvia: the stab wound on his side. The Mud Queen had used a piece of broken glass to try and stab him, but he'd rolled so she'd missed him. It was right above his hip, so walking was very painful, and he could almost feel the scab ripping away. His black T-shirt had hidden the blood from Sylvia, and she'd assumed the blood on the floor was that of Sadie.

Just as they were about to reach the tree, Sylvia slowed the ATV to a stop. Brett's was still in the cave, so there was no room for hers. She eased it forward, then thought about leaving it at her own home. But no, if the Mud Queen was waiting, she'd kill Jayden first, then her. She couldn't risk that. She would have to push Brett's ATV further into the cave.

It was a slow process, trying to be quiet with two ATV's. But finally, Sylvia helped Jayden off the seat. They rubbed their dog tags together, and she pulled his arm over her shoulders, wrapping an arm around his waist.

Jayden sucked in his breath when her fingertips just barely missed the stab. He knew fresh blood was oozing into the black, elven shirt he now wore.

“Does that hurt?” she asked.

The tenderness in her voice and the concern in her eyes melted Jayden. “A little.”

“In boy language, that means it hurts.” Sylvia said, as they walked carefully to the tree. When she opened the door, and they walked in, all the eyes of the elves were turned to her.

“It's Jayden!” shouted Isa.

As the crowd began to mass toward them, Sylvia shouted, “Stop! He's hurt bad, so clear the way to the moon room! Questions later!”

The elves backed away, leaving a path to the moon room. Sylvia and Jayden made their way toward the door. It was then that two things happened. First, Jayden's loss of blood was finally catching up to him and he lost his balance and nearly fell. Sylvia caught him just in time, and their faces were only inches apart. Second, Lucia came down the stairs and saw everything. Her uncontrollable feelings for Jayden overcame her, and she ran down the stairs and started fighting her way through the elves toward the retreating pair. She reached Frederick's door just as it closed behind them.

Unaware of Lucia's passionate fury, Sylvia half dragged Jayden into the moon room. Her dark dress hid the stains of Jayden's blood as well as his black shirt.

“Frederick!” Sylvia shouted.

“Jayden!” the old elf cried, coming down the stairs at a rapid rate. “What happened?”

“Mud Queen.” was all Jayden said.

“He's fading, Frederick.”

“Jayden, stay with us now.” and Frederick began unbuttoning Jayden's shirt. “He's lost too much blood.”

“Blood? What blood?”

“The blood he used to have.” Frederick said, now taking off the shirt, revealing the wound Jayden had hidden from Sylvia.

“Oh Jayden.” she whispered, tears sliding down her cheeks. “Why didn't you tell me?”

Jayden forced his eyes open. “Sylvia, I'm sorry.”

She moved to his head. “What do you have to be sorry for?” she asked.

“I'm sorry for everything I didn't tell you. I know I'm dying, and it's because I wanted you to think I was OK.”

Sylvia caught her breath. “You can't!” she turned to Frederick, who nodded his head slowly.

“He's lost too much blood. I'll do what I can, but it'll take a miracle.”

Sylvia looked back at Jayden. He smiled weakly. “Sylvia? I—” and he lost consciousness.

“Jayden!” Sylvia cried. “Jayden wake up!”

“He passed out. He's not dead.” Frederick said. “Now help me sew this up.”

Sylvia was glad for her strong stomach. Jayden didn't stir the whole time they sewed up his gash. Frederick and Sylvia then put him on a bed in the moon room. She refused to leave him for any longer than it took to get something to eat or drink and return. It was ten days of this and still Jayden barely showed any signs of life.

One night, Jake called her.

“Sylvia? It's Friday. We were going dancing tonight. I'll be at your house at six.”

“I can't go, Jake. I'm sorry. A friend of mine is really sick. He could die any time now. I can't leave.”

Jake sighed. “You said that last Friday, Sylvia. Every night you're doing something. When can I see you?”

“Look Jake, I know this is kind of weird, but I'm not seeing anyone. No one except Jayden.” as soon as she said it she regretted it. Jake's tone was filled with frustration and jealousy.

“Sylvia, I don't think we should do this anymore. You don't have time for a boyfriend. I need someone who will do stuff with me. Someone who will actually see me. I'm sorry.”

Before she could answer he hung up. At first she stared at the screen of her phone in shock. Then the tears came. Without realizing it she laid her head on Jayden's chest and cried into her arms.

Almost anyone who saw Sylvia at that moment would have been touched. She was so exhausted after ten days of constant nursing, that she soon cried herself to sleep. I say almost anyone because it wasn't Frederick who came to relieve her so she could eat, but Lucia.
